DonkeyHotey

Manipulating media with progressive intensity

About DonkeyHotey

Political cartoons, caricatures and illustrations created with Photoshop by DonkeyHotey.

DonkeyHotey art is most commonly found at the DonkeyHotey Flickr photostream where the images have received over five million views.

The art of DonkeyHotey is a combination of caricature, photo collage and photo manipulation. The resulting work can be categorized as caricature, cartoon, illustration and art depending on the intent.

On this blog, I have documented over 1,700 editorial uses of DonkeyHotey art on websites around the world including repeated uses on BuzzFeed, Campaign for America’s Future, CBS MoneyWatch, Common Dreams, Daily Kos, Examiner.com, Fast Company, Esquire.com, Firedoglake, Forbes, In These Times, IPS, Mother Jones, Neon Tommy, The Guardian, The Jimmy Dore Show, Truthdig, and dozens of others.

I am looking for a home base

I would like very much to work as part of an editorial team focused on producing digital content. One great benefit to me would be have access to a larger pool of images to use in my compositions. Now I restrict my selection of raw images to Creative Commons and public domain sources. Being on staff with a publishing entity would expand my creative options dramatically.

So far, I have posted over 1,300 images under Creative Commons license at Flickr. This has enabled publishers to find and publish my work. I have viewed this as a way to improve my work and to see what editors are looking for in artwork. I feel that I am ready to begin working full time for a publisher or to get involved at a digital startup or other project where my work would fill a need.  If you are interested in working together contact me using this form.

About the posts on this blog

Most of the items in this blog are examples of writers and/or publishers using DonkeyHotey caricatures, cartoons and illustrations.   The idea is to show visitors to this blog how DonkeyHotey images are being used by editors and writers across the Web. The examples have been discovered by various means. This effort is not an attempt to capture all uses of DonkeyHotey art. Links to these examples and the actual use of DonkeyHotey art in the content by the writers and publishers should not imply an endorsement of the content. In fact, I have not read most of these articles I link to completely. If I have linked to something you find objectionable please let me know. I am just trying to show how people are using my work as licensed under Creative Commons.

This is fine. I post links every few days.

      Thanks.

      Hi Lovechilde,

I think the reason I did not link to your post is that you were re-posting from another blog without adding commentary. My goal is to illustrate where writers and editors are choosing my art to illustrate their work. Does this make sense?

  1. Lovechilde (@FairUnbalanced1) February 16, 2012 at 5:04 pm

Makes perfect sense. Here’s another from today, although it is also a cross-post from another blog. http://fairandunbalancedblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/0000063-election.html
    Great stuff.

  2. Lovechilde (@FairUnbalanced1) February 24, 2012 at 12:44 am

One more thing. I just posted this on my blog as a way to show gratitude and attribution to you and other artists whose work I use: http://fairandunbalancedblog.blogspot.com/p/fair-and-unbalanced-artwork.html

  3. Eclectablog March 12, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Hello! I run the blog Eclectablog.com (with my blogging partner LOLGOP). We use your incomparable CC images from time to time for our blog posts and I’d like to make a contribution. I don’t make any real money with my blog but I’ll do what I can. What’s the best way to drop some folding money into your tip jar?

I’d also be interested in writing up a piece about you and your magnificent art if you’d consider doing an interview.

I can be reached at eclectablog over at teh gmail with dots and comes and stuff.

    • donkeyhotey March 14, 2012 at 2:08 pm

      Hi Electablog,

Wow, what a complimentary post! I appreciate the kind offer to contribute to a tip jar, but I am not set up to deal with that at this time. Regarding an article. Right now I am still basking in my pseudonymity, so I am also going to pass on the article.

      Thanks,

      DH

I would like to find out about hiring you to create and image (maybe more) for a new project. I love your work. Meagermind is by far my favorite and the reason I contacted you. Keep it up!

May I make a caricature request? I’ve been looking for a good caricature of David Vitter, but haven’t found even a bad one. I would greatly appreciate it, and I promise to link it back to you.

    Hi there DH,
Loving the artwork that you do and wanted to let you know that I’ve used one…
    http://tiptoetotruth.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/obama-vs-romney-totalitarian-tango.html
Oddly enough, I mention Don Quixote in there somewhere so it was probably meant to be.
    :o)
    Cheers,
    SIMON

I used your image on bentalksbaseball.com , another WordPress site. I believe I attributed it correctly based on your directions, let me know if not and ill fix it. Thanks!

  8. J Mann October 13, 2012 at 4:15 am

I used this photo but experienced some difficulty. It seems this photo can be used as long as you were cited (and you were), but please inform me if you would like the picture to be removed from the below blog: http://yesterdaysshadow.wordpress.com/?p=332&preview=true thank you

  9. Ryan Wenger October 31, 2012 at 10:31 am

DonkeyHotey I absolutely love your work, I was wondering if in your spare time you could take on an entire set request? …I’d absolutely love to see a set of as many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as possible. At least the household names would be awesome to see. Washington, Hamilton, J. Adams, S. Adams, Madison, Franklin, Jefferson, Hancock. The one you did of Washington is incredible.

    • donkeyhotey October 31, 2012 at 3:26 pm

It sounds like your request is not time critical and does not include remuneration. I think it would be good to add those images to my collection some time when political news is less interesting.

      Thanks,

      DH

We love your caricatures at MarylandReporter.com. Here’s the latest. Didn’t know you had done Gov. Martin O’Malley. http://marylandreporter.com/2013/09/15/rascovar-commentary-perry-vs-omalley-early-presidential-showdown/

Since we also operate under Creative Commons licensing, four or five other website will also likely use your art. Wish we could afford to pay for it. Perhaps we can commission some of our lesser known pols. Len@MarylandReporter.com

I would like to be sure that it would be okay to (possibly) use your “Taxes” image (made from a $100 bill) on the face of our client documents CD. We are a CPA firm in the Dallas area. I couldn’t find anything about trademark, copyright, or licensing. Thanks.

    • donkeyhotey January 23, 2014 at 3:23 am

      Hi Bill,

These images are posted under Creative Commons license on Flickr and your are free to use them provided you provide attribution.

      Please choose your “Taxes” images
      here
      Taxes - Illustration
      or here
      Taxes - Illustration

      The credit should be
      DonkeyHotey/Flickr

      Thanks,

      DonkeyHotey

  12. Bill Madsen January 23, 2014 at 8:24 pm

Thank you. DonkeyHotey is on the left side of the image itself, but not Flicker. Do you by chance have one that includes the proper Flickr reference? As I mentioned, would be printing the image on the face of a CD.

    • donkeyhotey January 23, 2014 at 8:32 pm

If you can’t put a credit somewhere in the text of the document then just use it as is. That would not always be acceptable, but in this case I think it will do.

      Thanks,

      DonkeyHotey

  13. Bill Madsen January 23, 2014 at 11:01 pm

Thank you. Here’s a link to how the image would be used:

  14. Greg Rubottom April 20, 2014 at 9:19 pm

Hi DonkeyHotey, I am in the process of creating a non-commercial music parody video about the GOP. If I use some of your images from Flickr would I be able to credit you at the end of the video in order to be able to use your images or would I need some sort of credit on each image as it displays in the video. Thanks much.

  15. Gary Jesch November 5, 2014 at 7:25 pm

Excellent artwork and it looks like you are having fun, being very generous. Are you still anonymous? How’s that working for you? I’d like to see you doing some character work for me, actually, and getting paid for it.

  22. Douglas Wilson June 17, 2016 at 3:24 pm

I would like to use your Citizens United Carpet Bombing drawing as part of our site banner and Facebook cover photo, but its placement in those locations makes it hard for me to attribute and link. Any suggestions? (Our project is Operation End Run, a nonprofit with a goal of avoiding Citizens United by persuading candidates for election to public office to refuse to accept contributions of more than X dollars.) — Doug Wilson

Hi. Love your work. Not sure how to reach you, but I would like to use a couple of your existing drawings in a political product—is Creative Commons license with attribution sufficient? Are you open to creating something unique by commission? Let me know!

B – I post some work on Flickr under Creative Commons. You can use the work if you follow the license.
